Remember when video game to movie adaptations were a standing joke? From Super Mario Bros. to Doom, Hollywood just couldn’t help itself. Take a well-loved IP with a set lore, and then think they could do better and change it all. Then end up sitting there looking dumbstruck as to why fans completely rejected it. Then somebody finally worked out that if you respect the IP, you could have success, like with Fallout.

Sony Pictures Television, Amazon MGM Studios, PlayStation Productions, and Tall Ship Productions have come together to adapt God Of War for Prime Video, and now a first image has been released.

The story follows father and son Kratos and Atreus as they journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos teaches his son to be a better god, and Atreus teaches his father how to be a better human.

The first image shows Ryan Hurst and Callum Vinson as Kratos and his son Atreus. They are joined by Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Jeff Gulka as Sindri, and Danny Woodburn as Brok.

The series is based on the Sony PlayStation game franchise and has an order in place for two seasons.

Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica, Outlander) serves as showrunner, executive producer, and writer.

Emmy winner Frederick E.O. Toye (Shōgun, The Boys) directs the first two episodes.
