Screenwriter Max Landis has been hired by Paramount Pictures to work on a treatment for a new feature adaptation of the Hasbro toy brand “G.I. Joe”.

At the same time, “The Righteous Gemstones” star and creator Danny McBride has been hired to work on a separate script for the project.

According to THR, the plan is to then try to blend the two scripts into one though one studio source claims there will be separate projects.

This is not entirely unusual; Paramount previously had multiple scripts in development at the same time based on their “Transformers” and “Star Trek” franchises.

What is unexpected is the hiring of Landis, son of John Landis, who was famed in the 2010s for selling spec scripts for millions and writing films like “Chronicle” and “Bright”.

Then, in the late 2010s, during the height of the #MeToo movement, numerous women stepped forward to speak about Landis’ alleged behaviour. In 2019, he was dropped by his reps, though ultimately no charges were ever filed against Landis.

Skydance notably hired former Pixar head John Lasseter to run its animation division, while Paramount is set to distribute director Brett Ratner’s “Rush Hour 4” – both men conrtroversial figures in parts of Hollywood.
