The film Zumeca, by acclaimed Dominican Republic filmmaker David Maler, is premiering in the Breakout Section of Slamdance Film Festival in Los Angeles.
David Maler is a leading actor and director and one of the defining voices of contemporary Dominican cinema. Trained in New York, Maler has become one of the most influential figures shaping the country’s modern film industry, both in front of and behind the camera. He is the recipient of multiple La Silla Awards, the Dominican Republic’s highest honors in film, presented annually by the country’s film industry professionals. Maler has built a strong presence as an actor, appearing in some of the highest-grossing films in the Dominican Republic. Most recently, he was seen on the big screen in Animales, a bold adult relationship comedy poised to make an impact in Dominican theaters and across the broader Hispanic market.
His directorial work includes El Método, No es lo que parece, La Boya, Todas las mujeres son iguales, and most recently Cuarencena, which was selected as the Dominican Republic’s Official Submission for the Academy Awards® in the Best International Feature Film category.
