American actor Eric Dane has died at the age of 53. Dane passed away less than a year after being diagnosed with ALS (aka Lou Gehrig’s disease).

ALS is the most common form of motor neurone disease, a degenerative disorder that causes progressive paralysis of the muscles.

Representatives say in a statement: “He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world.”

Dane was best known for his role as Dr Mark Sloan, aka McSteamy, in long-running medical drama “Grey’s Anatomy” as well as the recurring role of Jason Dean in “Charmed” and lead role of Captain Tom Chandler on TNT’s “The Last Ship”.

More recently he played the father of Jacob Elordi’s Nate Jacobs character in HBO’s “Euphoria” and Agent Nathan Blythe in Amazon Prime’s “Countdown”.

He also had notable roles in films like “Burlesque,” “Marley and Me,” “Valentine’s Day,” “Open Water 2: Adrift,” “X-Men: The Last Stand,” “Americana” and “Bad Boys: Ride or Die”.

Dane became an advocate for awareness and research into ALS in recent times.
