This one hits a little too close to home, mainly for purely selfish reasons. Eric Dane has died at the age of 53.

Age-wise, Dane was in a similar bracket to many Outposters. Born in the 70s, growing up steeped in the movie awesomeness of the 80s and 90s. The very era that shaped many of us into Outposters in the first place. 53 is no age at all.

Dane passed less than a year after being diagnosed with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. ALS is the most common form of motor neuron disease. It is a fast-moving degenerative condition that causes progressive paralysis of the muscles. His representatives issued a statement:

“He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world.”

Dane’s career was long. He had popped up absolutely everywhere. He was Saved By The Bell, The Wonder Years, and Married… With Children early in his career. He had the recurring role of Jason Dean in Charmed.  He was the stoic, dependable captain of the destroyer in The Last Ship.

His most famous TV role was probably Dr. Mark Sloan, aka McSteamy, in the long-running medical drama Grey’s Anatomy.

He played the father of Jacob Elordi’s Nate Jacobs character in HBO’s Euphoria and Nathan Blythe in Amazon Prime’s Countdown.

On the big screen, he appeared in Marley and Me, X-Men: The Last Stand, and most recently, Bad Boys: Ride or Die.

He had started experiencing symptoms in early 2024. By June 2025, he had completely lost the use of his right arm and hand, and he began using a wheelchair full-time by October 2025. Dane was an advocate for awareness and research into ALS ever since his diagnosis.

Along with James Van Der Beek recently, this is all a sobering reminder that, once you get to around that half-century mark, you suddenly start to find yourself in that shooting gallery of serious medical conditions.
