I don’t want to use the expression ‘Dropping like flies’, but it’s hard not to these days. Sadly, we have to report that Robert Duvall has passed away at the age of 95.
His death was announced on Facebook via a statement from his wife, Luciana Duvall.
“Yesterday we said goodbye to my beloved husband, cherished friend, and one of the greatest actors of our time. Bob passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by love and comfort. To the world, he was an Academy Award-winning actor, a director, a storyteller. To me, he was simply everything.”
Probably best known for his role as Tom Hagen, the consigliere of the Corleone family, in The Godfather. Just one of the great roles he had to his name, not to mention movies like To Kill a Mockingbird, Bullitt, True Grit (1969), THX 1138, Network, Apocalypse Now, The Natural, Days of Thunder, The Paper, Sling Blade, Deep Impact, Jack Reacher, Gone in 60 Seconds, and Pale Blue Eyes. The list was endless, spanning over 60 years, and also included many TV series.
Duvall was not just an actor, but also directed movies like The Apostle and Wild Horses. His gruff naturalism came to define the acting style of a generation. While he may never have been as big a star as some of his fellow actors, he had the respect of all who worked with him.
He was an actor’s actor who had seven Oscar nominations to his name; only winning a Best Actor for his role in Tender Mercies.
Duvall worked with Francis Ford Coppola in movies like The Rain People and Apocalypse Now, where his Colonel Kilgore gave us that immortal line.
We haven’t seen what caused his death, but at 95, it’s a good guess that it was just age. RIP Robert Duvall.
