Sony has announced in its latest earnings results on Thursday that “Ghost of Yotei,” which was released last October, has exceeded the sales of its predecessor “Ghost of Tsushima” in the same period of time.
The company also added that the game ‘significantly’ contributed to the company’s latest results. This fits with Circana data indicating ‘Yotei’ was the third-best-selling PlayStation game in the US last year and the overall 11th best-selling game across all platforms.
An actual sales figure, be it revenue or copies sold, wasn’t revealed. What confirmed data we do know is that “Ghost of Tsushima” sold 2.4 million copies in three days, but then took nearly four months to sell a further 2.6 million copies – putting its total at 5 million copies at the four-month mark.
“Ghost of Yotei” sold 3.3 million copies in its first month of release. This week it hits that four-month mark, which would suggest it sold at least a further 1.7 million in the three months since, most likely more.
This is also despite the PS4 having a larger install base when ‘Tsushima’ came out than the PS5 does now, so more players are available for it. ‘Yotei’ also cost $10 more at retail and begs the question if “exceeded the sales” refers to revenue, copies sold or both.
Sony also revealed that they have sold around 92.2 million PS5 consoles, virtually neck-and-neck with its predecessor in terms of the same point in its life cycle. The holiday sales period was especially robust, with the PS5 enjoying stronger-than-expected sales and outperforming Nintendo Switch 2 (8 million vs. 7 million).
Nintendo is said to be facing concerns regarding the Switch 2. Despite having sold almost 17.4 million consoles in just over six months, making it the fastest-selling console in history, investors are nervous that sales are too skewed – the machine is overperforming in Japan and underperforming everywhere else.
