Todd Harthan (“High Potential,” “Rosewood”) and Todd Helbing (“Superman & Lois,” “Black Sails”) have been set as co-showrunners on a new TV series adaptation of the “Eragon” book series for the Disney+ service.

Based on Christopher Paolini’s ‘Inheritance Cycle’ young adult novel series that began in 2002 and have collectively sold more than 40 million copies worldwide. The story follows a farm boy named Eragon who discovers an egg that hatches into a dragon he names Saphira.

Through their bond and the help of his mentor Brom, Eragon learns to be a Dragon Rider. Eragon and Saphira set out to defeat evil king Galbatorix and free the land of Alagaesia from his tyranny.

The synopsis for the TV series reads: “When destiny selects an ordinary teenager to become the first Dragon Rider in over a hundred years, he must forge an unbreakable bond with his dragon, master ancient magic, and challenge the mad king who destroyed the Riders.”

The property was previously adapted into the widely panned 2006 fantasy film starring Ed Speelers in the title role, along with Rachel Weisz, John Malkovich and Jeremy Irons in supporting roles. That film grossed approximately $250 million from a reported budget of $100 million.

Bert Salke, Marc Webb, Rachel Moore, Harthan, Helbing and Paolini will serve as executive producers on the series incarnation, which has been set up at 20th Television. The project was first announced as being in early development back in 2022 and is essentially trying an approach similar to Rick Riordan’s “Percy Jackson” novels.
