To be selected for preservation in the National Film Registry of the United States, a film must be deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically” significant enough to preserve, be over ten years old, and be submitted for consideration by the public.
Thousands are submitted each year, and relatively few make it through to the movie section of The Library of Congress.
“Top…men…”
This time around, movies from Christopher Nolan, Peter Weir, Wes Anderson, John Carpenter, Richard Linklater, Ed Zwick, Amy Heckerling, and Brad Bird are included in the 2025 selection.
The total number of films in the registry is now 925. As usual, Turner Classic Movies will host a television special on March 19th to cover their admission into the archive. Jacqueline Stewart, the film historian who chairs the National Film Preservation Board, says:
“It is especially exciting to see that the top title nominated by the public for this year, The Thing, has been added to the National Film Registry, along with The Truman Show and The Incredibles which also had very strong public support.”

They say you know you are getting old when policemen and politicians seem young to you. I imagine that for Outposters, you are getting old when movies we clearly remember going to the movies to see as children, or owned on VHS, are selected for preservation by the National Film Registry.
