Knives shall be sharpened. Arrows shall explode. Things shall be eaten that will make a billy goat puke. John Rambo will be formed. Filming is now officially underway in Thailand for the Lionsgate project. Stay away from Soi Cowboy on your days off, you naughty cast and crew!

John Rambo will be an origin story for the character, and will be set in Vietnam during the war, years before First Blood.

According to the press release, the project:

“…aims to dive deep into the roots and experiences that forged one of the big screen’s most enduring and complex characters.”

Noah Centineo (The Recruit, Street Fighter) stars in the title role.

It is tempting to dismiss this as an unwanted prequel, but… what’s this? Sisu helmer Jalmari Helander directs the project. Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani (The Mauritanian) write. And Helender says:

“This is Rambo stripped down, raw, and real – a survival story about endurance, persistence, and lost innocence.”

OK. I suppose I could be persuaded.

Anthony & Joe Russo are among the executive producers, with Kevin King Templeton, Les Weldon, Jonathan Yunger, Michael Disco, and Angela Russo-Otstot as producers.

The John Rambo cast is rounded out by Yao (Sinners), Jason Tobin (A Thousand Blows), Quincy Isaiah (Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty), Jefferson White (Yellowstone), and Tayme Thapthimthong (The White Lotus).
