Production appears to be gearing up on the third season of HBO’s “The Last of Us” as actress Kaitlyn Dever is ready to take the lead for the new run.

The first season of the show translated the 14-hour first game into nine episodes. The shorter seven-episode second season, however, translated about the first 40-45% of the 23-hour “The Last of Us Part II” game, which dealt with Ellie’s descent into darkness and vengeance.

The new season is expected to translate all, or almost all, of the remainder with an episode count not yet revealed. Like with the game, the perspective will shift to Abby’s character as we see her ‘Days 1-3’ in Seattle and her on a journey of redemption.

Speaking with Deadline yesterday, Dever confirmed she’s about to head back to work on the next run of the series:

“I’m getting mentally and physically prepped right now. I go up in a couple of days, actually, to start prep over there. I’m so excited to kind of take on a much bigger role in the season.

The fans are really going to like it, I think, the shifting perspective onto Abby, getting some more context onto her storyline and going back in time with this season. So, I’m very excited for the fans to see it.”

The series underwent a creative shakeup ahead of the third season as game co-creator and co-showrunner Neil Druckmann mostly exited, as did executive producer and writer Halley Gross, who helped co-write the “The Last of Us Part II” game. As a result, Craig Mazin is now serving as sole showrunner.

HBO has not yet announced whether the third season will be the last.

“The Last of Us” Season 3 is expected to air in 2027.
