Two-time Oscar winner Cate Blanchett has closed a deal reprise her role as Viking warrior Valka in the live-action “How to Train Your Dragon” sequel at Universal Pictures.

Adapting the 2014 second instalment, the story continues the adventures of Hiccup (Mason Thames), the dragon-befriending Viking who opened up his village to the possibilities of coexisting with the flying, fire-breathing creatures.

Valka is the long-lost mother of Hiccup, and wife of Viking leader Stoick the Vast (Gerard Butler). Both Butler and Blanchett voiced their respective roles in the original animation and have made the transition to live-action.

Nico Parker, Julian Dennison, Gabriel Howell, Bronwyn James and Harry Trevaldwyn also star. Marc Platt and Adam Siegel produce and the film is set for a June 11th 2027 release.

Franchise co-creator Dean DeBlois, who wrote and directed 2025’s first live-action version, is back as writer, director and executive producer. The first live-action film pulled in $636 million worldwide.
