Two years ago came the news that “The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum,” the first live-action Middle-Earth film since “The Hobbit” trilogy ended in 2014, was in the works.
As we know, Andy Serkis will direct and reprise his role of Gollum. Peter Jackson is producing, and Philippa Boyens and Fran Walsh are writing the script alongside Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou (“The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim”).
The only official actor returnees at this point are Serkis and Sir Ian McKellen as Gandalf the Grey, though Elijah Wood as Frodo seems set as well. However, we know that Aragorn is being recast as the now 67-year-old Viggo Mortensen is too old to play a younger version of his character.
Now, The One Ring (via SFF Gazette) reports that auditions are already underway to find the younger actor to take over from him with their source indicated known names are being looked at, but not some of the ones that fans have been suggesting.
“The conversations I had over the weekend were with real people-not just anonymous names on the internet. Based on those conversations, auditions for Aragorn are taking place this week in London. Aragorn is being recast, with auditions happening both in London and New Zealand.
I’ve been told by people close to casting that Ben Barnes and Sebastian Stan are considered too old for the vision of Aragorn. The film reportedly takes place in the 20 years prior to ‘The Fellowship of the Ring,’ acting as a bridge between ‘The Hobbit’ and ‘The Lord of the Rings.’”
Shooting on the new film is expected to kick off in May ahead of a planned December 17th 2027 release.
