Both the Gerard Butler-led “Greenland 2: Migration” and the horror film “Primate” open at the box office this weekend, and both come with very different prices.
Variety reports that the “Greenland” sequel, produced by STX, boasts a production budget of $90 million – far above the $35 million that the original film cost.
That movie earned $52.3 million worldwide, though it was hampered by the pandemic. Distributor Lionsgate acquired the domestic rights to the sequel for approximately $10 million.
The new film made just $900,000 in previews last night, with questions now if the film will reach its $8-10 million projections from earlier this week. Reviews have been mixed.
Meanwhile, the surprisingly fairly well-reviewed “Primate” landed $1.4 million in previews and is on track for around a $10 million debut – quite good for a film with a $21 million budget.
James Cameron’s “Avatar: Fire and Ash” is expected to again top the box office with another $20 million in domestic ticket sales.
