Sarah Michelle Gellar has offered an update on where things stand with the new “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” continuation series on Hulu.
A pilot for the series, titled “Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale,” was ordered and shot a while back. The pilot is being directed by Oscar winner Chloé Zhao along with having “Poker Face” co-showrunners Nora & Lilla Zuckerman as writers and showrunners.
Appearing on the Shut Up, Evan podcast recently, Gellar confirmed the show is a continuation of the original series in which Gellar will reprise her iconic role of Buffy Summers in a recurring capacity alongside Ryan Kiera Armstrong in the lead role.
She says the show looks at where Buffy “is now in this world and what is this world that Buffy lives in with her and without her”. She adds, “It’s not a reboot, it’s not picking up with all of the same characters right away. It is not like a sequel… That’s why the name was even important to me – Buffy: New Sunnydale. It’s Buffy, but it’s also something else.”
Asked where things stand right now, she says development is still ongoing:
“[We’re] still working on that, why and how. I know this seems like it’s taking a long time, and it’s because unless we are sure that it is exactly what we set out to do and that it makes sense to do it, we don’t want to sell you the legacy by not. When I know it’s perfect, then it will be out there, but I won’t do it unless I know it can be that.”
She says the aim isn’t to ‘be better’ than the original but to “hold and honor the memory and what we created… a lot of people put their blood, sweat, and tears into making what I think is an incredibly great show, and I’m incredibly proud of it.”
Faly Rakotohavana, Jack Cutmore-Scott, Ava Jean, Sarah Bock and Daniel Di Tomasso also star in the series.
