After looking like it was dead and buried for so long, Amazon MGM Studios’ live-action Tomb Raider has gathered pace and is about to start filming.
The full major cast has now been announced.
The series is expected to feature Lara Croft as an already established adventurer and archaeologist, so will eschew the origin story.
It is said to have a 1990s vibe, but has not been confirmed as being set in the 1990s.
The other major rumor is that it will involve Norse Mythology, but is separate from the Tomb Raider: Underworld game that involved the same.
British actress/writer and Emmy winner – and many people’s complaint with Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny – Phoebe Waller-Bridge is the show creator, writer and co-runner.
Chad Hodge is co-executive producer and co-showrunner alongside her.
Sophie Turner (Game of Thrones) will star as Lara Croft.
Sigourney Weaver will play Evelyn Wallis, a mysterious, high-flying woman who is keen to exploit Lara’s talents.
Jason Isaacs will play Atlas de Mornay, Lara’s uncle and the executor of the Croft estate.
Martin Bobb-Semple will play Zip, Lara’s right-hand man and tech expert.
Bill Paterson (Fleabag) is Croft family butler Winston, Jack Bannon (Pennyworth) is Lara’s personal pilot Gerry, John Heffernan (Dracula) is exhausted government official David, and Celia Imrie (The Diplomat) is the British Museum’s Head of Advancement Francine.
Paterson Joseph (Wonka) plays senior government official Thomas Warner, Sasha Luss (Anna) is a new adversary named Sasha, Juliette Motamed (We Are Lady Parts) is a British Museum curator named Georgia, and August Wittgenstein (Faithless) is fellow tomb raider Lukas who has a history with Lara.
The casting announcement came with a statement, with Waller-Bridge saying:
“Tomb Raider boasts a plethora of iconic characters. I am thrilled to have been able to bring some personal and fan favourites to the screen while also introducing a few new rascals of our own to the mix. This cast is beyond my wildest dreams.”
Filming on Tomb Raider starts before the end of this month.
