One name that keeps being linked with the vacant role of James Bond is 35-year-old British actor Callum Turner. Following his turn in Masters Of The Air he is regarded as one of the favourites.

Over the weekend, the noise about him in the role reached a crescendo, however it seemed to be the British press doing what it does best when it comes to movie news, particularly where Bond is concerned.

Basically, a tabloid showbiz journalist in one publication, lacking column inches and with a deadline approaching, resurrected an old story and put a new spin on it.

Then, as showbiz reporters do best, they all started reporting on each others stories. Before you know it, a run or based on spin seems like a done deal.

Turner was spotted on holiday with his partner, Dua Lipa, in Jamaica a couple of months ago. Here, they they stayed at Goldeneye, the former estate of author Ian Fleming where a number of Bond novels were written.

The Daily Mail then weighed in by reporting that Turner himself has been “blabbing all over town” he’s got the part and that “everyone in his circle is talking about it. It’s the worst-kept secret going”.

The report then goes on to say:

“Dua is over the moon for Callum. She’s been saying she’d love to record the Bond theme.”

The Times and The Independent then both picked up the story and, voila, it becomes fact.

Under the old Broccoli regime, it was an unwritten rule that nobody spoke about being cast in the role until the announcement. It was also part of cinema mythology that, if your name was linked to the role, talking too much about it simply made it go away.

Even with the new regime running Bond, it seems unlikely that Turner would be so indiscreet.

Enter online media to make sense of all this. World of Reel does fine work by tapping up sources to bring some sanity to the legacy media circle jerk.

“Turner has caught the attention of Villeneuve and Amazon/MGM, and yes, he is due for a screen test in the coming weeks, but he still hasn’t nabbed the role. Not even close.”

New director Denis Villeneuve is currently in post-production on Dune: Part Three so won’t be fully focussed on Bond yet.

Steven Knight is still penning the script, which will set the tone, which will inform the casting alongside Villeneuve’s vision for this iteration of the character.

So, basically, it’s British press bullshit and nonsense. It can be dismissed out of hand.

Turner may well end up as the new Bond, but he doesn’t have the role right now, and there are some fundamental logistical and reality based reasons why not.
