In 2024, shortly after the second-season finale, “House of the Dragon” showrunner Ryan Condal indicated that the “Game of Thrones” spin-off would likely end with its fourth season.

He’s now confirmed that the series will officially end with the show’s fourth season while appearing on the podcast Escape Hatch to talk about how difficult the production of this year’s upcoming third season was.

Filming on the third season wrapped in late October with post-production well underway. Condal then confirmed that writing on the fourth season had begun and it will be the show’s final run:

“We’re getting rough cuts and early material. I feel good. I’m walking a lot more now – commuting into central London on foot and by tube – which has been good for me. It really feels like we’ve turned a big page here. Knowing there’s only one more season left, it feels like we can leave it all out on the field. We’ve started the writing process for Season 4, which will be the last one.”

He teases the upcoming third season is the biggest by far, one that has left him creatively very satisfied but also physically exhausted: He adds: “Now, having finished and seeing early material coming in, there’s a real spring in my step. We shot a gigantic series. I’m feeling very bullish about it.”

“House of the Dragon” Season 3 will hit HBO this year. Filming and releases of each season have been at a steady two-year clip, which suggests shooting on the fourth and final season will begin in early 2027 for a 2028 airing.
