Acclaimed horror filmmaker Mike Flanagan says that his planned series adaptation of Stephen King’s “The Dark Tower” fantasy novel saga is closer than ever.

The long-gestating project went through various proposed adaptations over the years, resulting in one poorly received 2017 feature that served as something of a sequel to the books.

At the end of 2022 came news that with his shift from Netflix to Amazon, Flanagan would tackle a new adaptation that he sees spanning five seasons of TV along with two stand-alone features.

Asked by Empire (via Deadline) to provide an update on the series, Flanagan compared the series to an ‘oil tanker’ in that it takes time to steer. However, he adds that: “It’s moving. We’ve got a lot of scripts done for it. It’s the first priority.”

He also commented on the previous film, saying: “We can’t let that be the final word. We really can’t.”

The books blend dark fantasy, science fantasy, horror and western and follow Roland the Gunslinger, a man who wanders a post-apocalyptic wasteland in search of the structure that stands at the nexus of time and space. At the same time, an evil sorcerer known as The Man in Black is racing with him to reach that tower.

Flanagan most recently shot the “Carrie” mini-series remake, and he tells the outlet that he chose to do another adaptation of the story because “a new way presented itself, something that felt very timely and new.”

Flanagan is also slated to direct a new entry in “The Exorcist” franchise and wrote the script for next year’s DC Studios feature “Clayface”.
