Back in July 2022, Netflix and “Stranger Things” creators Matt and Ross Duffer had several notable projects in development

The pair’s newly launched production company, Upside Down Pictures, outlined their plans for several high-profile projects including a live-action take on “Death Note,” and the long-gestating series adaptation of Stephen King and Peter Straub’s 1984 fantasy novel “The Talisman”.

That book followed a young man who moves between New Hampshire and an alternate world called ‘The Territories’ to obtain an artifact that will save his mother’s life. Amblin Entertainment and Paramount Television were set to produce.

Now, speaking with CBR this week, the Duffers revealed that plans for the screen adaptation of “The Talisman” are dead at Netflix and they are no longer involved with the project:

Ross Duffer: “Sadly, ‘Talisman’ is no longer at Netflix, so we’re not involved.”

Matt Duffer: “I remember I was, I think it was probably naive of us to think we could break ‘The Talisman.’”

Ross Duffer: “When I interned, when I was really, you know, back in college at Kennedy Marshall, I remember reading, I think it was a movie script for Talisman. So it’s been in development forever, so I’m sorry that we were not the ones to break the curse.”

Attempts have been made to adapt the book for the screen essentially ever since it came out, to no avail. The Netflix series was first announced in 2021.
