Ocean’s 14 is closer than we thought. The budget has been approved at Warner Bros,. and the scheduling is underway, with a mid-2026 shoot on the cards.
Matt Damon returns as Linus Caldwell, alongside Brad Pitt as Rusty Ryan, Julia Roberts as Tess Ocean, Don Cheadle as Basher Tarr, and Andy Garcia as Terry Benedict.
George Clooney will reprise the lead role, and has revealed where this latest instalment will get its inspiration from. In an interview with Variety, he revealed that the main inspiration is the 1979 comedy-heist thriller Going in Style.
Going in Style was written and directed by Martin Brest. It starred George Burns, Art Carney, Lee Strasberg (in his final film role), and Charles Hallahan. It was Brest’s first commercial feature film.
It followed Joe Harding, Al Garner, and Willie Davis, three senior citizens who share a small apartment in Queens, New York City. Their days are spent on a park bench, and Joe is desperate to break the monotony. One day, Joe suggests that they go on a “stick-up”. They have no experience as criminals, but after some reluctance, the two others agree.
It was remade in 2017 to star Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, and Alan Arkin.
Clooney says the plan isn’t to revel in nostalgia, but to acknowledge the passing of time. He is 64, and the last Ocean’s to feature the main cast was 20 years ago. He explains:
“There was something about the idea that we’re too old to do what we used to do, but we’re still smart enough to know how to get away with something that just appeals to me. They’ve lost a step, and they need to find a way to work around their limitations.”
No director is yet confirmed. All three of the Clooney / Pitt / Damon movies were directed by Steven Soderbergh.
