Danny Ramirez will not be reprising his role as Manny in the upcoming third season of HBO’s “The Last of Us”.

Variety indicates reasons for Ramirez’s recasting are currently unknown though a scheduling conflict appears most likely with Ramirez linked to multiple film projects shooting next year – one of which may be “Avengers: Secret Wars”.

Manny is one of the core crew of Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) in the series alongside Spencer Lord as Owen, Tati Gabrielle as Nora and Ariela Barer as Mel, though he had the smallest role of the group in the second season. His fate was not seen on screen.

The third season will now shift to Abby’s perspective for much of its run over the three days in Seattle, in line with the second game’s back half. If it follows the game, Manny gets considerably more screen time on that first day and a bit more on the third day.

The new season notably sees the departure of game creator Neil Druckmann and writer Haley Gross, who have both stepped away, leaving Craig Mazin as the sole showrunner and writer.

Many big questions linger over that third season, following the decidedly more mixed reception to the second season and multiple controversial changes to the material – most notably in the personality of Ellie’s character.

Ellie isn’t expected to be in much of this season by the nature of the story, and there are questions as to whether Mazin will wrap up the show entirely. Filming is expected to begin early next year ahead of a release in 2027.
