Even if you are not a follower of those weird, fringe sports that only get played in the USA, you will have heard of John Madden.
Not only did he gift his name to some video games, but he was also effectively the coach in the NFL. He served as the head coach of the Oakland Raiders from 1969 to 1978, leading them to eight playoff appearances, seven division titles, seven AFL/AFC Championship Game appearances, and the franchise’s first Super Bowl title in Super Bowl XI.
Never having a losing season, Madden holds the highest winning percentage among NFL head coaches who coached at least 100 games. He is considered potentially the greatest American Football coach of all time.
He then went on to become a color commentator for NFL telecasts from 1979 to 2009 and won 16 Sports Emmy Awards while appearing on all four major American television networks.
He was basically the Don of Gridiron. So it seems fitting that he gets a biopic. Not just any biopic, but one starring Nicolas Cage and Christian Bale. Cage will portray the legend, and an earlier spy photo had already unveiled his uncanny likeness for this movie.
Madden is co-produced and directed by David O. Russell, who co-wrote it based on an earlier version by Cambron Clark. Kathryn Hahn, John Mulaney, Sienna Miller, and Shane Gillis all co-star.
The Amazon MGM Studios production will be released in November 2026.
