The original “Star Trek” series revolved around its core crew members – Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Scotty, Sulu, Uhura, and Chekov.

When “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” launched, the series began with younger versions of Spock (Ethan Peck), Kirk (Paul Wesley) and Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) in place, as were some smaller characters from the original series like Dr. M’Benga (Babs Olusanmokun) and Nurse Chapel (Jess Bush).

Scotty (Martin Quinn) was introduced in the second season finale, but there’s been no further original series crew members coming aboard – that’s about to change in the final season.

THR reports that none other than Thomas Jane (“The Expanse,” “Deep Blue Sea”) has boarded the series as Dr Leonard ‘Bones’ McCoy for the show’s fifth and final season, which just wrapped production.

In addition, newcomer Kai Murakami will play Hikaru Sulu. Both characters will reportedly appear in the final episode which essentially will see Kirk take command as the captain of the Enterprise.

The Chekov character didn’t appear in the original series until the second season, so his absence is understandable. The show’s fourth season will air next year with a shorter fifth and final run to screen in 2027.
