Game design legend Vince Zampella, co-founder of developer Infinity Ward and head of Respawn Entertainment, has died in a car crash on Southern California’s Angeles Crest Highway.
The car reportedly veered off the road in the San Gabriel Mountains and hit a concrete barrier, subsequently catching fire. Zampella was driving and was reportedly trapped inside; the passenger (who was ejected during the crash) died in the hospital.
Infinity Ward released a statement honouring Zampella and said that his “legacy of creating iconic, lasting entertainment is immeasurable”.
Zampella’s influence can not be overstated. He started his career as a graphic designer in the 90s, eventually working for game companies such as Atari and Sega and was lead designer on the acclaimed ” Medal of Honor: Allied Assault”.
He co-founded Infinity Ward, whose first job was to create what became the “Call of Duty” franchise, with Zampella and co-worker Jason West leading the franchise through “Call of Duty 2,” “Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare,” and “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2”.
Fired after the success of that latter 2009 title, he then co-founded Respawn Entertainment, where he worked on the two “Titanfall” games, “Apex Legends” and “Star Wars: Jedi – Fallen Order”.
He then moved to DICE and was put in charge of the “Battlefield” franchise after the disastrous launch of “Battlefield 2042,” where he developed what became this year’s $400 million-budgeted game “Battlefield 6” – which has now become his final game.
