From Terminator, through Aliens, to Avatar, James Cameron has a strong seam of sci-fi running through his filmography. However, his only big Oscar wins were for Titanic. So it is no surprise to find him adding his voice to the talking point that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, for some reason, simply doesn’t like sci-fi when it comes to the big awards.
They may clean up in the technical categories, but when it comes to the prestige awards at the top of the bill, the Academy gets all sniffy about pew-pew lasers and big spectacle in space.
In a recent interview with The Globe and Mail he pointed to the recent Dune movies as an example.
Denis Villeneuve wasn’t nominated as a director, despite the movies being nominated and sweeping the technical awards.
I don’t think about the Academy Awards that much – intentionally. I don’t think I make a movie to appeal to that sensibility, I guess. They don’t tend to honour films like ‘Avatar,’ films that are science fiction, for example – they’re almost never properly recognised.
You know, Denis Villeneuve made these two magnificent ‘Dune’ films. Apparently, these films made themselves, because he wasn’t considered a director, not even by the Directors’ Guild.”
Cameron, second perhaps only to Ridley Scott for his bluntness, closed out the remarks with a jab:
“It’s like, okay, you can play the awards games, or you can play the game that I like to play, which is to make movies people actually go to. Sorry.”
Fellow director Chris Miller also spoke up about this, with a social media post at the time stating:
“There were many films that had great directing this year, but what Denis did — in all aspects of the craft — was masterful.”
Dune: Part Three opens late 2026, maybe 2027 will be the year that the Academy notices?
