Mom… those Na’vi are doing it again! Topping the box office and making bank with zero buzz and zero cultural impact, before they completely vanish from the public consciousness until the next sequel, leaving behind no trace of their existence other than a massive sack of cash. James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash has done it again.
The latest trip to Pandora is sitting at $88 million for the weekend, clear in the number one spot. It made $345 million worldwide, making it second only to Zootopia 2 in the global opening stakes. The Sunday drop was quite low, too, so it may have the legs of the first two entries.
David, a faith-based movie, came in second place with $22 million – $0 internationally, as apparently God doesn’t travel.
Sidney and her Sweeney’s were in third place with The Housemaid at $19 million, and the new SpongeBob SquarePants film was fourth with $16 million.
Zootopia 2 was fifth, with a now $1.27 billion worldwide total.
Universal’s Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 and Wicked: For Good might appear on PVOD over Christmas, as they look to be stalling out at the box office.
The big news is award contender Marty Supreme. It only opened in six screens and still pulled in $875,000 with superb reviews. Eyes will be on the wide release next week.
