Sony Pictures Entertainment and Sony Music Entertainment Japan have acquired a significant stake in Peanuts Holding LLC.
That’s the company that controls the IP rights of Charles M. Schulz’s beloved “Peanuts” characters like Charlie Brown and Snoopy.
The purchase price was disclosed as around $460 million and covers all of the 41% stake previously held by Canadian kids and family entertainment company WildBrain.
The result of this deal means that Sony, which already had a stake in the venture, will now own 80% of Peanuts Holdings, with members of the Schulz family owning the remaining 20%.
Sony will now focus on keeping the characters around and building up the brand.
20th Century Fox Animation and Blue Sky Studios previously produced “The Peanuts Movie” in 2015, which was well received.
