At the height of the Cold War, Western observers kept a keen eye on Russian television. The decisions taken over what movies to show were seen as a a harbinger of the mood in the Politburo. If they seemed to want to whip up the populace in some kind of Russo-centric patriotic fervor, then the West should get concerned. If they stared showing Alexander Nevsky, Chapaev, and The Girl From Leningrad on rotation then it was time to set DEFCON2.
Anyway. Netflix has cancelled its sensitive military coming-of-age comedy-drama series Boots.
This was the final show of legendary producer Norman Lear, and was a critical hit, doing solid numbers. The show seemingly had executive support internally.
It was created by Andy Parker and inspired by Greg Cope White’s memoir The Pink Marine. Boots followed the story of directionless, and in the closet Cameron Cope (Miles Heizer) as he joins a diverse bunch of recruits for the US Marine Corps of the 1990s. Back then, being gay in the military was illegal.
The show follows Cameron and other members of his cohort as they navigate boot camp. Along the way, lessons are learned.
I can’t imagine why the blob would let a show like Boots get cancelled.
Say, has anyone else noticed that military recruitment ads have, after years of talking about diverse belonging and finding a home in the kinder, more welcoming military, started showing hardcore action and top-tier tech set to moody action-thriller music again?
Netflix and Sony Pictures Television claim they looked at the long-term viewership data and opted not to renew, despite extending options to several cast members. More interestingly, due to an agreement, Sony can’t shop the series around to other streamers or channels. Weird.
Anyway, can’t hang around here all day, I feel a sudden urge to go abseiling while wearing night vision goggles.
