Disney Pictures is in early development of a new live-action film centered on the “Beauty and the Beast” villain character Gaston.
The character, who first appeared in Disney’s original 1992 animated classic, is an arrogant and ruthless hunter infatuated with the beauty Belle who has no affection for him.
He ultimately becomes the main adversary of The Beast. In 2017, the Bill Condon-directed live-action adaptation of “Beauty and the Beast” saw Welsh actor Luke Evans playing Gaston.
Talk of a TV series spin-off, with Evans reprising the role, swirled at one point in the late 2010s but never eventuated.
This take will be a new and original version with a new and likely younger actor (Evans was already 39 when he took on the live-action role) being eyed and will have ‘swashbuckling’ tones to it.
No director is attached to the project at this time, but Dave Callaham (“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings”) is writing the script with Michelle Rejwan (“Andor,” “Obi-Wan Kenobi”) producing. Kate Herron and Briony Redman penned a previous draft.
