AMC is developing a TV series adaptation of the iconic 1991 Kathryn Bigelow-directed action film “Point Break”

The original remains a hallmark of the action genre, a film full of iconic lines and scenes combined with a well-aging respect for its strong filmmaking fundamentals. Patrick Swayze, Keanu Reeves, Lori Petty and Gary Busey starred in the W. Peter Iliff-penned film.

It followed a rookie FBI agent named Johnny Utah, who infiltrates the Ex-Presidents, a gang of Southern California surfers who rob banks. He gets swept up in their daredevil lifestyle before a massive action chase and a reunion amid lethal waves.

The new series takes place 35 years after the events of the original and is focused on a dangerous heist crew with ties to the Ex-Presidents gang. The project has no ties to the widely panned 2015 remake starring Edgar Ramirez and Luke Bracey.

David Kalstein (“Butterfly,” “Treadstone”) created the series which has been set up at Alcon Television Group and AMC Studios. Kalstein will write and executive produce alongside Andrew Kosove, Broderick Johnson and Ben Roberts.

AMC has recently had major critical success with its “Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire” series which returns for a third season next year under the name “The Vampire Lestat”.
