A story swept the internet last week that Scarlett Johansson was practically nailed on for a role in Matt Reeves’ The Batman: Part II. Now, a report over at The InSneider claims to know what the mysterious role is – Gilda Gold.
In the comics, Gilda is mainly known as the fiancée of Gotham City D.A. Harvey Dent. It won’t have taken any Batman aficionados among you to have started making connections here, and no doubt you are looking at The Long Halloween.
It is one of the most critically lauded Batman stories of all time, and it deals primarily with the fall of Harvey Dent and a mysterious serial killer known only as “Holiday” who systematically murders prominent gangsters among the city’s two powerful crime families, the Falcones and the Maronis.
This ignites a vicious gang war that leaves the Gotham underworld in tatters, and ripe for takeover by a new, rising power in the form of “costumed freaks” who are now vying for control of the gangs.
This could easily be made to dovetail with the events of The Penguin series, and would build on where this version of Gotham was left at the end of The Batman.
This would strongly suggest that Harvey Dent will be in this movie. Which leads us to another rumor last week that was quickly shot down, but refuses to go away. The production has been talking to Brad Pitt about a significant role. Well, wouldn’t that be interesting?
It would also present DC Studios with something of a problem. They may well be tagging this Bat-verse as “Elseworlds“, but if you still have one of the hottest young actors on the planet locked in as Batman, talent like this lining up, and coming off the back of multi-Emmy nominations and other award wins for The Penguin, how do you decide to launch another Bat-iteration against that?
Surely you just find a way to fold this into the new DCU and lean in to, revel in, the massive juxtaposition between this hopeful, bright new world of Superman and the dark and brooding version of The Batman? Have some fun with it. Look for the storytelling potential within it, rather than running away from it?
The Batman: Part II starts filming in spring for a 2027 release. Locations are once again Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, Liverpool, and Glasgow in the UK.
Robert Pattinson, Jeffrey Wright, Andy Serkis, and Colin Farrell reprise their respective roles as Batman, Jim Gordon, Alfred Pennyworth, and the Penguin.
