Five years ago came the news that Tom Cruise was in early talks with Elon Musk’s SpaceX and NASA to shoot a movie in actual space.

How far along the project got was never clear, we do know that Doug Liman was slated to direct and only part of the $200 million action-adventure project would be shot in orbit.

Cruise was to play a down-on-his-luck guy who finds himself in the position of being the only person who could save Earth. Now though, Page Six is reporting that the movie appears to have disintegrated in orbit.

An insider for the outlet says the film fell apart due to issues of logistics and politics:

“From what I understand, they would need NASA coordination to do the movie, and supposedly Tom Cruise did not want to ask Donald Trump for a favor. You’d need permission from the federal government. Tom didn’t want to ask for political reasons.”

The outlet says Cruise has stayed mostly apolitical over the years, with the source claiming he did not want to alienate fans by starting now.

While a Trump-appointed NASA head already expressed support for the Cruise project, that official is no longer in place and “there have never been any further discussions inside the space agency about the film”.

That’s not all, though, as basic logistics for the film were tricky with questions about insurance, costs and other factors, with the outlet indicating director Liman failed a physical to launch.

Scheduling has also proven an issue with Cruise and Liman both tied up with other projects for the forseeable future.
