How is your day going? Are you in a good mood? Well, I’m going to change all that. I read this article about Kristen Stewart talking about method acting, and it annoyed me, so I’m passing it on. According to Stewart, all of acting is “quite embarrassing and unmasculine”.

What’s Your Method?

Method Acting is described as ‘rehearsal techniques that seek to encourage sincere and expressive performances through identifying with, understanding, and experiencing a character’s inner motivation and emotions’. We all know of actors like Marlon Brando, Daniel Day-Lewis and Christian Bale going all ‘method’.

Brian Cox called the method “American shit”, and now Stewart has talked about it. In an interview with The New York Times, Stewart said:

“Performance is inherently vulnerable and therefore quite embarrassing and unmasculine. There’s no bravado in suggesting that you’re a mouthpiece for someone else’s ideas. It’s inherently submissive. Have you ever heard of a female actor that was method?”

“Men are aggrandized for retaining self. Brando sounds like a hero, doesn’t he? If a woman did that, it would be different. If you have to do 50 push-ups before your close-up or refuse to say a word a certain way…There’s a common act that happens before the acting happens on set: If they can protrude out of the vulnerability and feel like a gorilla pounding their chest before they cry on camera, it’s a little less embarrassing. It also makes it seem like a magic trick, like it is so impossible to do what you’re doing that nobody else could do it.”

Do Women Do Method?

There are actresses that have gone method. Meryl Streep went method on The Devil Wears Prada, acting all aloof throughout the production of the movie. She said about the experience:

“It was horrible! I was [miserable] in my trailer. I could hear them all rocking and laughing. I was so depressed! I said, ‘Well, it’s the price you pay for being boss.’ That’s the last time I ever attempted a method thing!”

Well, duh! Miranda Priestly was a bitch of a character. If you behaved like her on set, what did you expect? I’m sure if Streep went method on The Bridges of Maddison County, she would have had a better time. Sophie’s Choice, not so much.

Natalie Portman once said that method acting was a “luxury that women can’t afford.” How so, Natalie? Are you talking about all the ‘acting’ you had to do for The Phantom Menace?

Are the ladies correct? Is method acting a luxury that women can’t afford, or just something silly men do to make them look better on screen?
