Many were caught by surprise in October when actor Adam Driver and filmmaker Steven Soderbergh revealed the existence of a scrapped “Star Wars” film titled “The Hunt for Ben Solo”.
The project, which had been in development for two years, was expected to serve as a standalone spin-off of the sequel trilogy and followed Ben Solo/Kylo Ren after the events of “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker”. “Logan Lucky” scribe Rebecca Blunt and longtime collaborator Scott Z. Burns penned the script, which was said to be complete.
By all accounts, the film had progressed fairly far at Lucasfilm until Disney’s top executives pulled the plug. Driver then publicly revealed the project this year in an Associated Press interview.
Cut to today. Actress Daisy Ridley, who starred as Rey in the “Star Wars” sequel trilogy, was asked about the project and revealed that she had heard rumblings but was as surprised as everyone else when the news was revealed. She tells IGN:
“I knew a piece of it. I heard rumblings. I have lots of friends who are crew, so things always travel like that. But, whoa! When the story came out, no, I was like, ‘Oh, my God!’ And it was him that said it, right? It was funny because, like, ‘Oh, wow, Adam is saying it,’ and that’s the big surprise of the year.”
Ridley, who has seen her fair share of a mixed response from the fanbase to the films she was in and the way her own character was written, says that she’s been heartened by the positivity the news received:
“I do love when there is a collective of positivity. The way the internet seems to have rallied to try and get it to happen. It’s fantastic for us all. It’s good for us to all be united about something in a really positive way. Obviously, everyone knows he was a very popular character, but it was also lovely to think, ‘Wow, people really, really care and want this.’ I just… I like it.
I like when people join forces – excuse the pun – from all around the world, all different sorts of people. I just love that the ‘Star Wars’ fandom is such a huge and gorgeous array of different points of view and different people, and the fact that everyone is really behind this thing, I think, is just sort of lovely, in a time that is so fucking nuts for probably every single person on this Earth. I think it’s wonderful. So I was surprised, and honestly, I felt joyful about how it went down.”
Ridley is expected to return to the “Star Wars” universe in a New Jedi Order film taking place fifteen years after ‘Rise of Skywalker’. George Nolfi is penning the script for the film, which is still in active development.
