Mattel Studios has announced that Vin Diesel will not only star in, but will also now write the film adaptation of the “Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots” tabletop boxing game.

Diesel has been attached to the project since at least 2021. At the time, “Rampage” scribe Ryan Engle penned the screenplay for the film which follows a father and son who form an unlikely bond with an advanced war machine.

That screenplay appears to have been ditched, or at least is being heavily rewritten by Diesel, who is still slated to both star in and produce the film which will feature two iconic characters from the game: Red Rocker and Blue Bomber.

In a press release, Diesel says: “I am excited to expand the Mattel universe by bringing this classic toy from my childhood to a modern audience by telling a story that examines the role of competition in a world often measured by strength and dominance that dares to reveal the power of compassion at its core.”

Robbie Brenner, President of Mattel Studios and Chief Content Officer, says: “Vin is a powerhouse storyteller with an unmatched understanding of action, heart, and world-building. His creative vision for Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots is bold, human, and deeply cinematic – exactly the kind of storytelling we love at Mattel Studios.”

Additional producers include Robbie Brennerm Darian Greenbaum and Andrew Scannell and Diesel’s sister Samantha Vincent.

Mattel has both “Masters of the Universe” and “Matchbox” films slated for 2026.
