Anyone who only became aware of comic books with the dawn of the MCU would think of nobody but Jon Bernthal as The Punisher. Very few would cast their minds back as far as Dolph Lundgren starring opposite Louis Gossett Jr in 1989.
Before Bernthal, there was Ray Stevenson in a very cartoonish Punisher: Warzone. That was a quasi-sequel to another effort from 2004 starring Thomas Jane. There was also an online only short, also featuring Jane as the character.
Jane has Frontier Crucible, his new movie, coming out shortly, and in an interview with ComicBookMovie.com he was asked about his time in the role:
“I was very passionate about it. I did a short film called ‘Dirty Laundry’ that I produced and put together. I had a blast, and I’m so grateful to have been inducted into the world. I’m a big comic book fan.”
When pressed, he seemed to indicate that he thinks he was miscast:
“He’s an Italian. He’s got black hair and a whole different sort of lineage. He was born in the 70s, as the antithesis of the Italian mob. They had taken over the world briefly, and The Godfather came out of it, too. Frank was the answer to that. Francis Castiglione. I’m not that guy. I had to dye my hair black and become a different guy. I’m happy the part is played by someone who is more right for that role. I had fun, and I did the best I could with it.”
Frontier Crucible is a Western directed by Travis Mills. It is based on the 1961 novel Desert Stake-Out by Harry Whittington, and it features the return of Armie Hammer.
