Obviously, Haiti or a certain private island will be off the agenda, but East Timor is “go” for a Clinton-centric tale. Kevin Costner is reportedly close to signing on as former U.S. President Bill Clinton for the political drama series United.

No cigars will be in the Oval Office for this one. Instead, it will center on a UN mission to East Timor in 1999. The reports in Esquire say the drama will credit Clinton with leading the negotiations with Indonesian officials to de-escalate the conflict vs. the independence movement, which had the backing of the United Nations.

Chukwudi Iwuji (Peacemaker) is said to be lined up as UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.

East Timor

Originally a Portuguese colony, East Timor became part of Indonesia after they annexed it following the 1975 unilateral declaration of independence. The crisis began in the late 1990s with attacks by pro-Indonesia militia groups on civilians after they started to make noises about independence.

General violence exploded throughout the country, centred in the capital Dili. Following a vote for independence, a scorched earth operation by militia groups destroyed 80% of Dili’s infrastructure and killed at least 1,400 civilians.

A UN-authorized force (INTERFET) consisting mainly of Australian Defence Force personnel was deployed to East Timor to establish and maintain peace.

United will be written and directed by David Raymond (Night Hunter), and Costner will executive-produce the series along with Leonardo DiCaprio. The series will be produced in association with the United Nations. Raymond works with the UN’s Creative Community Outreach Initiative.
