Anyone with kids of a certain age is all too aware of Moana. Most would probably agree that it’s a damn good Disney effort. Great fun, memorable songs, and possibly their last really good movie before they entered their self-destructive phase, where the lunatics were allowed to take over the asylum. And who knew The Rock could actually sing?
Their record with their live-action adaptations is more mixed. For every Lilo & Stitch, there is a Snow White. So how will Moana fare from the live-action remake-o-tron? Well, now we have our first look.
Disney Pictures has released the teaser trailer, and we get to see Australian actress Catherine Laga’aia (The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart), plus the briefest glimpse of Dwayne Johnson reprising his role as the demigod Maui.
The cast is filled out by Frankie Adams (The Expanse) as Moana’s mother, Sina; John Tui (Battleship) as Moana’s father, Chief Tui; and New Zealand actress legend Rena Owen (Once Were Warriors) as Gramma Tala.
You know the story by now. Moana answers the Ocean’s call and, for the first time, voyages beyond the reef of her island of Motunui with the infamous demigod Maui on an unforgettable journey to restore prosperity to her people.
Like with The Jungle Book and The Lion King, the phrase “live action” could only be applied loosely, judging by this teaser.
Thomas Kail directs from a script by Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller. Johnson, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia, and Beau Flynn produce the film.
Moana is set to release in cinemas on July 10th, 2026. Expect it to be huge.
