Fire up the remake-o-tron! Another well-loved classic from just about our time, or possibly our parents’ era, could be about to be fed into the machine. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ryan Reynolds is developing a remake of the 1974 action comedy Thunderbolt & Lightfoot for Amazon MGM Studios.

The original starred Clint Eastwood as Thunderbolt. He is a bank robber disguised as a preacher to stay one step ahead of his old gang. They believe he double-crossed them, and want their revenge.

He meets up with Lightfoot (Jeff Bridges), a low-level thief. The two hatch a plan for a new bank job involving the old gang. As expected, everything goes wrong.

This was Michael Cimino’s first movie. He would then win an Oscar for The Deer Hunter. Shortly after that, he would prove that you really can’t win ’em all with Heaven’s Gate.

The remake would be from Reynold’s own Maximum Effort production house, and he would star in the lead role. Given Reynold’s ability to connect and mine a cameo out of just about anyone in Hollywood, the list of potential actors who might take on the Lightfoot role is endless.

Deadpool & Wolverine editor Shane Reid will be promoted to director, with a script being spun up by Enzo Mileti and Scott Wilson (Fargo).
