If I were a betting man, I would say that The Thing would make it into just about every Outposters’ top 100 movies of all time list. John Carpenter’s 1982 sci-fi horror, a remake of an earlier movie that was itself based on a sci-fi novella, remains worthy of revisiting at any time.
Switching effortlessly between encroaching paranoia, deepening dread, and flat out alien body horror, The Thing is not an enjoyable watch, but remains a gripping one.
A box-office bomb on release, it has grown in stature over the years. It has been prequelised, had comic book sequels, haunted house attractions, and video and board games, but never a sequel movie.
Back in 2023, Carpenter himself talked of a potential sequel at the Texas Frightmare Weekend. This past week, Carpenter appeared at Fan Expo Philadelphia where World of Reel reports that the topic came up again and Carpenter gave the briefest of updates:
“We’re working on it now…I don’t know. We’ll see.”
Carpenter is now 77, and last directed The Ward in 2010. He was composer and executive producer on the recent Halloween continuations.
