As the world of cinematic distribution adjusts to the new reality that they created, the +billion dollar gross is no longer the benchmark of success. Controlled costs, and anything north of $500 million, are what make a hit these days. Like Jurassic World: Rebirth.

It grossed less than previous instalments, but the costs were much better controlled, so profitability was far higher. It eventually topped out at $900 million globally, turning a very tidy profit for Universal.

Critically, it did OK too. Casual fans broadly agreed that, like all Jurassic entries, it was fine when it stuck with the main, core story. When it decided to follow a side quest involving that Achilles heel of all Jurassic Park / World movies – kids – is when it dragged.

Now the The InSneider reports that they are putting the band back together. Gareth Edwards will return to direct a follow-up, and Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, and Mahershala Ali will all be joining him.

David Koepp wrote Jurassic World: Rebirth. It was fast-tracked by Universal from script to screen in a little over a year. Edwards will be involved in the development from the beginning this time, unlike for Rebirth where he joined late in the day as a replacement director.

Steven Spielberg will also return as an executive producer.
