It still boggles my mind that Universal’s Dark Universe was allowed to be such a spectacular failure. The weirdest collection of Hollywood incompetence I have seen for a while, and I lived through both the Star Wars sequels and Warner Bros. first attempt at trying to launch a DC cinematic universe. It all started to go wrong, so very quickly, with The Mummy.

Back in the 1990s, The Mummy movies rode the crest of a wave. Somehow capturing some ground abandoned by Indiana Jones, they brought swashbuckling adventure to a previously spooky subject, and they just worked.

So, using The Mummy as a franchise launcher, with some of the biggest stars in Hollywood all lined up, should have been a home run. Didn’t work out so well. Not even Tom Cruise could save them.

So Universal instead embarked on a partnership with Blumhouse, and the classic monsters recieved a more low-key modern update. Most importantly, an affordable one. The Invisible Man and Wolf Man will now be followed by a new version of The Mummy.

This one will be from Evil Dead Rise filmmaker Lee Cronin, again under the Universal and Blumhouse/Atomic Monster banners. Scooper DanielRPK reports that the official synopsis is:

“After his missing daughter mysteriously returns eight years later, a father discovers she carries the spirit of an ancient Egyptian mummy, and as the evil spreads to his other child, he must perform a deadly ritual to save them, even if it means becoming the monster himself.”

What’s more, the movie now has a new title – The Resurrected. Well… OK. That’s hardly top-tier brand recognition there, is it, Universal?

Jack Reynor, Laia Costa, Veronica Falcón, May Calamawy, and May Elghety star in the film. Principal photography is complete. James Wan, Jason Blum, and John Keville produce

The Mummy… sorry, The Resurrected, is currently slated for a release on April 17th, 2026.
