Alien: Earth is a critical hit and is rumored to be doing big numbers on Disney+ globally. Meanwhile, a sequel to last year’s Alien: Romulus is planned.
Director Fede Alvarez was returning. Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson were expected to reprise their roles, and Alvarez was working with co-writer Rodo Sayagues on the script since the last movie opened.
Earlier this year Alvarez spoke highly of the script process and added:
“[I] think the sequel is my next movie”
Then, on Friday, the news dropped that Alvarez would not be returning to direct the sequel. He will now be listed as a producer. So what happened?
According to Jeff Sneider on The Hot Mic podcast , there is a lot of spin being put on this, and a possible clash with producer Ridley Scott is what is behind this:
“This whole ‘we’re going to pass the torch’… you have been talking and planning this for the last year. The torch got passed over him. Ridley might be bigfooting him. Fede wanted to use Michael Fassbender, and Ridley said no because ‘I may want to come back to the series,’ and if so ‘I want to be the one who brings him back and uses him’. Obviously, who is going to win that clash, Ridley. It was creative differences, let’s put it that way.”
If Hawley is the new golden boy with Scott, then this could be tricky, as Alien: Earth is apparently designed so it can be as many as three seasons, depending on how the numbers look, and as we said, they are rumored to be looking good. That means he is going to be busy on TV and won’t be free to jump across to the movie side of the franchise.
Ridley Scott is 87 and still making a movie every 18 months.
