It looked like it was dead in the water for so very long, but now Tomb Raider is finally going to move at Amazon. After being linked online for quite a while, it has also been confirmed that Sophie Turner is the new Lara Croft.
Turner topped the shortlist that included Mackenzie Davis, Emma Mackey, and Lucy Boynton for the role.
A statement has been released in which Turner says:
“I am thrilled beyond measure to be playing Lara Croft. She’s such an iconic character, who means so much to so many – and I am giving everything I’ve got.”
She follows in the footsteps of Angelina Jolie, Alicia Vikander, Keeley Hawes, Rhona Mitra, and Hayley Atwel,l who have all portrayed the video game legend across different media.
Phoebe Waller-Bridge remains as the show’s creator, writer, and co-showrunner. She also put out a statement:
“It’s not very often you get to make a show of this scale with a character you grew up loving. Everyone on board is wildly passionate about Lara and are all as outrageous, brave, and hilarious as she is. Get your artifacts out — Croft is coming.”
You go, girlfriend! I feel strong, confident, and independent already!
Chad Hodge is co-showrunner, and production starts early in the new year. Reports say this version of Croft will already be an established archaeologist adventurer. The tone is said to be akin to The Mummy from the 1990s.
