Peacemaker season 2 was always going to have to do something in order to “fix” the DCEU/DCU continuity problem. The first season was firmly anchored in the old DCEU, the Snyderverse, by a scene near the end of the final episode. The Justice League (minus Batman) turned up, and Peacemaker interacted with Aquaman (Jason Momoa) and Flash (Ezra Miller).

The second season comes after the dawning of the new DCU with Superman.

So what did James Gunn do to solve this story issue? There may well be some multiverse shenanigans involved, as part of the first episode of season 2 deals with dimensions and portals and all that stuff. However, Gunn might have just done something much simpler. A good, old-fashioned retcon.

The season premiere began with a ‘Previously On’ recap that included the first season finale scene, but the DCEU Justice League was swapped out to be replaced by the DCU Justice Gang from Superman. In this version, Green Lantern, Supergirl, Superman, Mr Terrific, and Hawkgirl are present.

Speaking with TV Insider, Gunn seemed to hint that it really is just as it seemed. A simple retcon. He also said there are no plans to reshoot or further retcon the first season:

“No, unfortunately I’d have to change too many little things throughout Season 1, and it would cost too much money, and I’d rather just give that money to a few more CGI shots of superheroes.

But I think that we deal with it. We say, canon is really Creature Commandos, Superman, Peacemaker Season 2. I’d love for people to watch Season 1. Obviously, we’re changing that one thing, but we’re not gonna go back and reshoot all of it for Season 1, at least not at this point.

At some point, I’d love to [George] Lucas the s— out of it, but right now I don’t have the money.”

The first episode of the new season also replaced a comment on Aquaman and fish with one about Green Lantern and a gross fetish, while featuring Peacemaker having an interview to join the Justice Gang.

The second season of Peacemaker has very strong reviews and drops weekly on HBO Max, or Sky Max across the pond.
