Is this it? Is the age of the screen idol finally over? For years, Tom Cruise had been the last man standing, a remaining movie star and matinee idol pushing back against the wave of IP-based content. So if he can’t get a movie made with his own star power, then it might be the end. Deeper is in… ahem… deeper trouble.

About a month ago, we reported that Deeper was in trouble. There was a disagreement over the budget, and Cruise wasn’t budging on requirements. Warner Bros. wanted $200 million, and allowed themselves to be talked up to about $230 million, but Cruise and the team wanted $275 million. As a result, the movie was going to move away from Warner Bros. and find a new home.

They were rushing to find a new studio as the shoot was set to begin imminently.

The Doug Liman-directed movie was already several months deep into pre-production at this stage, and nobody wanted to write-off anything.

Now, according to a report at Puck News, Liman is already looking around for a new project, and this is seen as a signal that Deeper won’t be moving forward any time soon. Universal are yet to recieve a pitch and don’t seem desperate to do so. The budget is really putting people off.

Remember, this is a Hollywood that is finally waking up to the self-harm it has inflicted through these enormous budgets. They had reached a point where movies had to be knocking on the door of the $1 billion club to make a decent profit, and the chances of a $1 billion box office take looked increasingly remote for even big releases.

Deeper would have co-starred Ana de Armas and seen Cruise play a disgraced astronaut who embarks on a deep-sea mission to explore a recently discovered ocean trench, only to encounter a mysterious and dangerous force.

Not anymore, it seems.
