We showed you the trailer for Super Charlie the other day, and it looked like fun. The good news is, it was fun. We were sent a screener.

Super Charlie stars Orlando Wahlsteen, Silas Strand, Sven Bjorklund, Ulla Skoog, Tuva Novotny, Johan Rodin, and Joakim Jennefors. Jon Holmberg directs and writes, based on books by Camilla Lackberg.

The Story

Super Charlie is a superhero movie, but don’t worry, it’s not another James Gunn movie.

Willie’s dream of fighting crime with his cop dad is shattered when his baby brother Charlie arrives. Besides stealing all the attention, Charlie turns out to have actual superpowers.

The movie opens 50 years ago, and there’s a bicycle race about to start. No one can beat this one little kid, Anton, because he’s souped up his bike with inventions. However, one kid is going to try, Inferio. As they race, a comet passes over Earth and drops some strange gas.

In the race, Anton cheats and knocks Inferio off his bike. Just then, the mysterious gas hits Inferio, and he gains superpowers. From this point on, Anton the inventor kid is now just the bitch of Inferio.

Inferio Rules

It’s now present day, and Anton is still working for Inferio, but he has a plan. He’s worked out that the comet, with the special gas, is due back near Earth. This time, he’s going to get the gas and become super, overthrowing Inferio.

In a nutshell, it all goes wrong and ends up in Chalie, the newborn brother of Willie. Willie soon discovers Charlie’s superpowers and tries to help solve a case his father couldn’t. His father is a policeman who’s been on the trail of Inferio for years.

The story is actually really good, like, a better story than Black Widow. OK, that’s a low bar, but it’s nice to see someone really think things out and make a story that is fun to follow along with.

The Cast

I don’t know any of the names on the cast, but I think the English version has different people. The lip-sync isn’t perfect, and I think it was originally done in Swedish/Danish and then dubbed.

I don’t know what it is about English dubs, but they don’t often put in the same effort. In Super Charlie, you can tell the original, Swedish voices would have been a lot better. I’m being nitpicky, but the acting is a little off-putting at times.

Overall

The thing about Super Charlie is that it was just fun. It’s a well-thought-out story, with a satisfying conclusion, something very lacking these days.

Willie is the main focus of the story, with Charlie as the ‘sidekick’. What was good was to see Willie go through an arc and learning life lessons. Again, a very well thought-out story, it felt like something ‘new’ for 2025.

This is for kids, but there are jokes for the adults as well. There was one moment I really belly laughed, I want to say why, but I fear I will get into trouble. Basically, another mother in the story has had a baby, and she thinks her baby is a prodigy. There’s a shot of the baby later and on, and it’s not a genius. I laughed far more than I should have.

Super Charlie is funny, clever, and not a Disney superhero movie. I would totally watch this again, and I know I would still have fun with it. It’s not your average movie, but then, that’s the point.

Super Charlie will be in cinemas from the 15th of August.
