Everyone knows the Marvel Cinematic Universe has continued to struggle post-Endgame, with Marvel Studios openly talking about a reset. With Daredevil: Born Again being totally re-tooled (and decent!), we got the first look at their change of direction. Now, Fantastic Four: The First Steps is set for release, and Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige is out doing interviews. Speaking with Variety he was candid about the struggles of Phase 4 and Phase 5 of the MCU and says they won’t be repeated.
For starters, they won’t be producing anything like that volume of content again, saying they:
“…produced 50 hours of stories between 2007 and 2019 (but since 2019 they produced) well over 100 hours of stories – in half the time. That’s too much.”
He also bluntly played back something we have been saying here at Last Movie Outpost for a while:
“(It) led people to say, ‘It used to be fun, but now do I have to know everything about all of these?’ For the first time ever, quantity trumped quality. ”
He cited Superman and its success to dismiss superhero fatigue, saying the issue was oversupply in the genre, not the genre itself. Speaking of Superman, he said:
“I liked it a lot. I love you just jump right into it. You don’t know who Mister Terrific is? Tough, you’ll figure it out. This is a fully fleshed out world.”
The really big news came from an interview with Deadline when he confirmed that they will “reset singular timelines” following the events of Avengers: Secret Wars, but he hates the word “reboot”:
“Reboot is a scary word. Reboot can mean a lot of things to a lot of people. Reset, singular timeline – we’re thinking along those lines. X-Men is where that will happen.”
Speaking of Avengers: Secret Wars:
“…it very, very much sets us up for the future.”
He also revealed that Miles Morales will not appear in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, or in the MCU at all, any time soon:
“That is nowhere… we’ve been told to stay away.”
The rights to Morales, like Spider-Man, do not belong to Marvel Studios but to Sony. Spider-Man: Brand New Day starts shooting in Scotland any day now.
