It seems that Robert Eggers has decided on the leads for his next project, Werewulf. He will return to two actors from Nosferatu – Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Lily-Rose Depp.
The project, set up at Focus Features, is set in the medieval England of the 13th century. In what could accidentally be a pile of pretentious old crap, it will apparently feature dialogue that is correct for the time period and will include translations and annotations direct from Ye Olde English.
“Old English” was actually Anglo-Saxon, and is the earliest recorded form of the English language, spoken from roughly the 5th to the 12th century in what is now England and many parts of Scotland. It’s a West Germanic language and is very distinct from Modern English. It is considered largely incomprehensible to modern speakers without study.
Beowulf was written in Old English, as was the original Lords Prayer. The first line of that prayer in Old English is:
“Fæder ūre þū þe eart on heofonum”
Oh yeah. This is going to be a absolute riot!
Eggers has co-written the story with Sjón and he describes it as a “medieval werewolf movie” and “the darkest thing I have ever written, by far”. The story will contain ancient legends of lycanthropy alongside witchraft and lashings and lashings of gore.
Taylor-Johnson will be the one to develop an interest in carnivorous lunar activities while Rose-Depp will be his wife.
Production will begin on Werwulf this September ahead of a debut at Christmas next year.
